Science Cafés offer opportunities for anyone to find out more about new, exciting and topical areas of science. Designed to be informal and entertaining, they run regularly in existing coffee houses or bars on a weekday evening and are FREE OF CHARGE. There will be a short talk by an invited speaker on a new or controversial science-related topic, followed by a discussion where members of the audience get the chance to ask any questions they may have.

Science Cafés, also known as Café Scientifique, have been running in the UK since 1998 but up until now there have been none in Wales. Techniquest was awarded a grant from COPUS – supporters of science communication projects – to set up a network of five science Cafés across Wales in late 2004 and early 2005. These locations are Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham. The project aims to run at least one Café in each location per year through the medium of Welsh.
